Sheriff courthouse and county hall built 1834 · William Burn architect · Here stood the king's castle in the 12th century when David 1st founded the Royal Burgh of Inverness · The early timber castle was replaced by a high stone tower in the 16th century when the Earl of Huntly was the constable · The castle was the northern strong-point of royal authority during clan wars and civil strife until 1726 when General Wade enlarged it into a Hanoverian fort · The first Fort George · Blown up by Prince Charles Edward Stewart's Jacobite army · 1746 the only remains today of the old castle are the deep well and parts of a bastion wall · Inverness Field Club 1967
