Built in 1913, 246 West End Avenue is one of only two buildings designed on the Upper West Side by the acclaimed architect James E.R. Carpenter, recognized as the creator of the "modern" apartment. Designed in an amplified Renaissance palazzo style, the building reflects the architect's master concept for luxury residences built during the Golden Age of apartment-house construction. His pioneering design principles would prove to influence generations of future architects.
