"Barnacle Bill" was an All-American standout on the Navy Football team until his accelerated graduation with the Class of 1943 in June, 1942. He served in combat aboard destroyers during World War II, eventually returned to his alma mater as athletic director; and, following retirement from active duty, became executive director, then president and chief executive officer of the Alumni Association. Bill served in that capacity for 23 years and another 11 years as president emeritus.
