Buell's Brigade

—Wood's Division —

8th Battery, Indiana Light Artillery
4 6-pdrs., 2 12-pdr. howitzers.
Buell's Brigade, Wood's Division, Crittenden's Corps.Sept. 20. 1863.
Captain George Estep, Commanding
1st Lieut. Jeremiah Voris.
1st Lieut. Samuel Winsor.
2nd Lieut. William Stokes.
2nd Lieut. Charles B. Eldred.

Early in the morning the battery with Wood's division occupied a position on the ridge west of what is now known as Lytle Station. About 9 o'clock it moved to the frontline with Buell's brigade as support, from which position it fired 3 or 4 shots.(Continuation Tablet):

Soon after 11 o'clock, while the brigade was moving by the left flank, the enemy burst upon it in such force as to drive it back. The battery was turned to the left crossing acorn field to this position. The Confederates came up in heavy lines to the right of its front and the battery opened upon them with shell and canister. Other batteries were engaged in the same line and holding their own until the Confederates opened a galling fire upon the right flank and rear, charging from the right and capturing the guns. Casualties of the battle: 6 guns and limbers; 2 caisons; 1 man killed; 9 wounded; 7 missing; 56 horses killed and disabled.
