 Teatro Manuel Doblado31 de diciembre de 1868Manuel Cánovas y Joaquín González (los dos hombres más ricos de León en la época), colocan la primera piedra del Teatro Gorostiza. La construcción de este teatro era un lugar anhelo y una necesidad verdadera. El único recinto de su tipo hasta entonces era la vieja Plaza de Gallos, la cual había sido inaugurada cuando todavía existía la Nueva España. El Ayuntamiento compró la finca que ocupaba la esquina de las actuals calles de Pedro Moreno y Hermanos Aldama y aportó 22 mil 500 pesos para su edificación. Bajo la dirección de una junta cívica integrada por los notables de la ciudad se concluyó la obra totalmente una década más tarde y tuvo un costo final de 183 mil pesos. Cabe resaltar que en ese tiempo todavía no se construían otros recintos de merecida fama como el Juárez de Guanajuato, el de La Paz en San Luis Potosí o el de Bellas Artes en la Ciudad de México. Originalmente sería llamado Teatro Gorostiza - en honor del dramaturgo y periodista Manuel Eduardo de Gorostiza - , pero finalmente recibió el nombre del diplomático, político



y general liberal guanajuatense Manuel Doblado, quien gozó de merecida reputación y respeto entre sus vecinos leoneses. Teato Manuel DobladoSu construcción comenzó en 1869 y se inauguró formalmente el 15 de septiembre de 1880 con la ópera 'Vacbeth'. Fue diseñado por el arquitecto José Noriega y podía albergar hasta 2 mil personas, una cifra considerable para una ciudad que entonces tenía 100 mil habitantes. Durante décadas el teatro alojó todo tipo de eventos y espectáculos, incluyendo el muy popular cinematógrafo. Deteriorado y abandonado a su suerte, el foro original - en forma de herradura y dividido en luneta, palcos y plateas - , se perdió irremediablemente a mediados del siglo pasado. Duró casi 20 años en ruinas. En su momento, autoridades y sociedad se unieron para rescatar el teatro, recuperando su elegante fachada de cantera de rigurosa estética neoclásica y dotándolo de un foro moderno para poco más de mil 300 espectadores. Fue reinaugurado en 1979 y desde entonces han pasado por su escenario actores, músicos y bailarines de talla mundial. A la fecha mantiene una activa vida cultural y artística. Sede principal del Festival Internacional Cervantino (FIC), el teatro Manuel Doblado alberga también la galería de arte 'Jesús Gallardo', la más importante de la ciudad.

Government and society came together to rescue and reopen it in 1979. It is the Cervantino International Festival (FIC), headquarters in Leon, houses also the "Jesus Gallardo" Art Gallery, the most important one in the city.
