English:The History of Chemulpo StreetChemulpo Street is so named in remembrance of the 1,033 Koreans who in 1905 boarded a vessel in the Port of Chemulpo and emigrated to Mexico. Landing in the Mexican port city of Merida, these Koreans left their homeland at a time when Korea was gradually losing its sovereignty to Japan. They never returned home. Duped by a British agent recruiting labor for farm owners in Mexico, these Korean immigrants arrived expecting an idyllic climate and untold riches. Instead, they had to endure unfavorable weather and abject working conditions on the Yucatan henequen farms and railroad construction sites. It is popularly believed that "Chemulpo" derives from the cries of these early impoverished immigrants to Merida as they drank, bemoaned their misfortunes, and fondly recalled the last image of their fading homeland as they sailed away. "Chemulpo! Chemulpo! Chemulpo!" It is said that a local businessman accordingly changed the name of his business to 'Chemulpo', which in the passage of time has today come to refer to the corner known locally as "El Chemulpo." Today the Korean port of Chemulpo is better known as Incheon, a thriving city on the west coast of the Korean Peninsula. Through its modern port and a major international airport, Incheon is now the main gateway to Korea, a rapidly growing regional economic hub, and home to 2.7 million people. Incheon and Merida have been Sister Cities since October 15th, 2007. Installation: Incheon Metropolitan City, The Republic of Korea (December 11, 2007)
