 Casa del Mayorazgo de la CanalLa residencia y los terrenos a donde fue construida pertenecieron a la familia y Mayorazgo de la Canal, a través de tres de sus generaciones, encabezadas por Manuel Tomás de la Canal y Bueno de Baeza, José Mariano Loreto de la Canal y Hervás y Narciso María Loreto de la Canal y Landeta. Vecinos y propietarios españoles principales, regidores comerciantes, hacendados, benefactores, fervientes devotos volcados en las fundaciones civiles y religiosas de la antigua villa de San Miguel el Grande.Fue edificada en varias etapas durante las últimas décadas del siglo XVIII, por lo cual es portadora de un elegante neoclásico, aunque impregnada aún de elementos barrocos.Se levantó amestuosa y señorial en dos nivele, en uno de los costados de la plaza de armas o plaza mayor, en la antigua calle de la Santísima Trinidad. Según los padrones civiles y religiosos que se hicieron en San Miguel hacía la década de 1790, refieren que esta casa estuvo habitada por cerca de 21 personas, incluyendo a los propietarios, hijos y servidumbre. Durante este tiempo fue el hogar de José Mariano Loreto de



la Canal y Hervás y María Francisca de Landeta y Primo, así como de sus hijos Narciso, María Josefa, Manuel, María Ignacia, José María y María Laurencia. Tiempo después, sus paredes vivieron los momentos más intensos del Coronel del Regimiento de los Dragones de la Reina, Narciso María Loreto de la Canal, durante años de su nombramiento, su ejercicio en el cuerpo militar, así como en el estallido del movimiento de independencia. La fachada principal de este inmueble es digna de admirarse. La impresionante portada está formada por finos y detallados altos relieves, una muestra del talento y la fina ebastería del siglo XVIII. Corona la portada señorial, una piedra clave con un águila, que representa la insignia del regidor alférez real, papel que dio honory prestigio a varios miembros de esta familia. Le flanquean dos robustas columnas corintias, que soportan a fuertes y lineales cornisas, en las que se levanta un frontón circular. El remate lo forma una imagen labrada de la Virgen de Loreto, patrona de la villa de San Miguel, jurada por el cabildo español hacía el año de 1736. Una devoción difundida ampliamente por la familia de la Canal, a través de importantes fundaciones de santuarios y capillas. La presencia de la imagen de Loreto, como un elemento escultórico o pictórico en cada una de las casas que pertenecieron a los de la Canal, se explica además por haber



sido nombrada patrona del mayorazgo fundado por Manuel de la Canal y María Gabriela de Hervás y Flores, hacía el año de 1743. En cuyas condiciones, se mandaba que los herederos debían de llamarse y firmar con el nombre de María Loreto y el apellido de la Canal, antes de otro alguno. La imagen de Loreto es esta fachada, se encuentra custodiada por el linaje que dio los cimientos a esta histórica familia, representada en dos excelentes labras heráldicas: a la izquierda, las armas de la Canal, y a la derecha, las armas de los Hervás. Se levantan así mismo en este nível, cuatro columnas corintias que sostienen un frontón circular, el que luce un escudo con la Cruz de Calatrava, haciendo referencia a la orden de caballería de la que obtuvo habito Manuel de la Canal. English:House of the Primogeniture of de la CanalThe residence and the grounds where it was built belonged to the family and the entail de lla Canal through three of its generations, headed by Manuel Tomás de la Canal y Bueno de Baenza, José Mariano Loreto de la Canal y Hervás y Narciso María Loreto de la Canal y Landeta, main Spanish neighbors and owners, aldermen, traders, farmers, benefactors, fervent devotees dedicated to the civil and religious foundations of the old village of San Miguel el Grande.It was built in several stages during the last decades of the 18th century, for which it is bearer of an elegant neoclassical, although still impregnated with baroque elements.It rose majestically and stately on two levels on one side of the Arms Square or Main Square on the ancient street of the Holy Trinity. According to the civil and religious registers that were made in San Miguel towards the 1790s, they refer that this house was inhabited by about 21 people, including the owners, children and servitude. During this time it was the home of José Mariano Loreto de la Canal y Hervás and María Francisca de Landeta y Primo, as well as their
children Narciso, María Josefa, Manuel, María Ignacia, José María y María Laurencia. Time later, its walls lived the most intense moments of the colonel of the Regiment of the Dragons of the Queen, Narciso María Loreto de la Canal, during the years of his designation, his exercise in the miitary body, and in the outbreak of the Independence Movement as well.The main facade of this building is worthy of admiration. The impressive doorway consists of fine and detaled high reliefs, a sample of the talent and fine carpentry of the 18th century. A key stone with an eagle crowns the doorway, which represents the insignia of the royal ensign, a role that gave honor and prestige to several members of this family. It is flanked by two sturdy Corinthian columns, which support strong and linear cornices, where a circular pediment is erected.The finish forms a carved image of Loreto, patron saint of the village of San Miguel, sworn by the Spanish council towards 1736. A devotion widely spread by the de la Canal family through important foundations of shrines and chapels. The presence of the image of Loreto, as a sculptural or pictorial element in each of the houses that belonged to the
de la Canal, is also explained by being named patron of the primogeniture founded by Manuel de la Canal and María Gabriela de Hervás y Flores around 1743. In which conditions it was ordered that the heirs were to be called and signed with the name of María Loreto and the surname de la Canal before some other name. The image of Loreto on this facade is guarded by the lineage that gave the foundation to this historic family, represented in two excellent heraldic styles: on the left, the weapons of the de la Canal and, on the right, the weapons of the Hervás. They rise likewise at this level four Corinthian columns that hold a circular pediment, which shows a shield with the Calatrava Cross, referring to the ordre of chivalry of which Manuel de la Canal obtained habit. The architectural ensemble reveals, in its entirety, a petrified image of the eternal nobility of its builders and inhabitants. Sources repeated in Spanish
