—Greatest Moments —On Opening Day, the players had new uniforms that featured red trim for the first time. Willie McHale, a writer for the St. Louis Republic overheard a lady fan remark, "What a lovely shade of cardinal" and repeated this on his column the next day. The nickname stuck and became official in 1900.
