Belhaven College for Young Ladies was founded in 1883 at the estate of Senator Jones S. Hamilton and named for his Scottish home, "Bel Haven," translated "Beautiful Home." Fire destroyed the College In 1894 and again In 1910 before it was donated to the Presbyterian Church and relocated to this undeveloped acreage just north of Jackson's city limit where the Belhaven neighborhood has since developed around the campus. After a century of higher education, the school was renamed Belhaven University in 2010.
