H.M.S. Ganges Boy (1935 DJX 144907)
Leading Seaman
Magennis

who while serving as the diver
in H.M. Submarine XE111
was awarded the
Victoria Cross
for a feat of outstanding courage
and endurance in a successful attack
against the Japanese heavy cruiser
Takao, in the Johore Strait off
Singapore on 31~July 1945
He received his decoration
from King George VI
at Buckingham Palace
on 11~December 1945

was unveiled by
the Rt. Hon. The Lord Mayor,
Councillor Robert Stoker
on Friday 8th October 1999.
It was commissioned by Belfast City Council
with assistance from the National Lottery Arts Fund
