Jordan Soil Plots were a pioneer effort to determine long-term effects of fertilizers on soil and crops. 144 plots, between today's Curtin Road and College Avenue, were established in 1882 by Professor Whitman H. Jordan. Some remained under study as late as 1959. The plots were Penn State's first large-scale undertaking in scientific research.
