(English translation:)

1891- Born in Wrocław, Poland (formerly Breslau, Germany) on October 12, 1891 (Yom Kippur), as the 11th child to the Steins, a Jewish family. Studies at a college preparatory high school, then becomes a university student. Loss of faith.


1911 - 1916 Studies philosophy, psychology, German language, and history in Brelau and Goettingen.

1916-1918 Moves to Freiburg and becomes an assistant to Edmund Husserl (at the University)
Becomes interested in the Christian faith, and decides to convert to Catholicism after reading the Autobiography of Teresa of Avila


1922 Baptized in Bad Bergzabern

1922-1933 Works as a teacher in Speyer und
lecturer in Muenster

1933 Her teaching position is revoked by the Nazis

1934 Enters the Carmelites of Cologne, and takes the religious name of Teresa Benedicta of the Cross.

1938 Takes holy vows

December 31, 1938 Flees to the Carmelite monastery in Echt, Netherlands

August 7, 1942 Deportation to the Auschwitz concentration camp

August 9, 1942 Death in the gas chamber at Auschwitz-Birkenau

May 1, 1987 Beatified in Cologne by Pope John Paul II.

October 11, 1998



Canonized in Rome by Pope John Paul II.
