On Oct. 5, 1838, about 800 Potawatomi Indians camped at McKee's Creek near here on the forced removal from Indiana to Kansas, known as the Trail of Death. They crossed the Illinois River by ferry. Leaving the river they had to seek water, because of the severe drought of '38.
This plaque placed in commemoration in 2003 by the people of the Perry, Illinois, community and The Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Shawnee, Ok.
