At Valley Forge, Dan Ellis usually assembled for Federal regiments whom he guided over obscure mountain trails to Kentucky, while East Tennessee was under Confederate control. Born 1827 and a veteran of the Mexican War, he was subsequently Captain of Co. "A," 13th Tennessee Cavalry, USA. He died in 1907 and is buried in the family cemetery 14th District.
