Less powerful "Sportsmen's" cars specified for Speedweek's 1st race as lower speeds were sought. Many of 91 starting Sportsmen's cars were detuned modifieds without dual carburetors and racing heads. A racer flipped into dune area smashing 4 spectator's cars. Gober Sosebee won after Buck Baker and Joe Wolf cars broke. In Grand National race, Tim Flock finished second, after he pitted, he borrowed cars from his brother Fonty's crew.
