Less powerful "Sportsmen's" cars specified for Speedweek's 1st race as lower speeds were sought. Many of 91 starting Sportsmen's cars were detuned modifieds without dual carburetors and racing heads. A racer flipped into dune area smashing 4 spectator's cars. Gober Sosebee won after Buck Baker and Joe Wolf cars broke. In Grand National race, Tim Flock finished second, after he pitted, he borrowed cars from his brother Fonty's crew. Marshall Teague won in a Hudson and became 1st stock car racer to receive factory deal including new personal car, salary and inside line on parts.
