William Hay, a Scotsman,
was Peru's first settler. He built
his house in this vicinity in 1772.
Hay had a friendly relationship with
Benedict Arnold and witnessed
the "Battle of Valcour." The town's
first marriage was between Hay's
daughter, Maby, and Lott Elmore.
