The "Fountain" came into existence in the center of Hummelstown's Square in 1910 as a memorial to honor Henry Hershey and Nancy Landis Hershey. It was erected by their son, Henry Landis Hershey. It should be noted that by this time, piped water under pressure was fully installed in Hummelstown. This fountain provided drinking water for dogs from its lower trough, and for horses through its four bronze lion head spouts spilling into the four bronze lion head spouts spilling into the upper trough. Public wells were available in Hummelstown from earliest settlement time, and some records indicate a pump located in the Square. All of the elements—the bowl, the lower trough, and the fountain centerpiece—are turned from solid granite. the base for the fountain is noted to have been donated by the Hummelstown Brownstone Company. The fountain was piped into the Borough's water supply.

By 1927 the memorial fountain had been relocated to Locust Park at Rosanna and Railroad and High Streets, where it is illuminated and is under the care and admiration of the neighbors.

The new fountain in the Square continues the tradition of a memorial. It was provided by the family of Henry Spire to honor him for his service to the community.
