(September 19, 1863, 3 P.M.)

This Brigade advanced with its Division from Kelly field about noon. Willich's Brigade was on its right, and Dodge's in reserve. It soon struck the left flank of Forrest's Cavalry (dismounted) and forced it to the rear. It then turned southward and fought its way to this position from which it repulsed a heavy attack on its front and left flank. At dusk, just as Colonel Baldwin had received orders to withdraw to the Kelly field, his line was furiously assaulted by Polk's Brigade of Cleburne's Division, which latter advanced upon Johnson's Division from the direction of Jay's Mill. Colonel Baldwin was killed, and the battle which lasted an hour after dark, was attended with great confusion, it being impossible to detect the lines except from the flashing of the guns.

At

the end of an hour the engagement ceased, and the Brigade withdrew to the Kelly field.
