Cheatham's Division

— Polk's Corps —

Wright Brigade
Cheatham's Division, - Polk's Brigade.
Brigadier General Marcus J. Wright.
September 19, 1863, Noon 1st Position.

8th Tennessee, - Colonel John H. Anderson.
16th Tennessee, - Colonel D.M. Donnell.
28th Tennessee, - Colonel Sidney S. Stanton.
38th Tennessee, Murray's (Tennessee) Battalion, - Colonel John C. Carter.
51st and 52nd Tennessee, - Lieutenant Colonel John G. Hall.
Carnes' (Tennessee) Battery, - Captain William W. Carnes.

This Brigade was formed near the southern border of the Brock field about 11:30 a.m. with Preston Smith's Brigade on its right. Advancing it soon encountered the troops of Palmer's Division, and later, those of Samuel Beatty's and Dick's Brigades of Van Cleve's Division. After two hours' engagement, being still further threatened on its left flank by King's Brigade of Reynolds' Division, it was forced to the rear with the loss of its battery which could not be withdrawn, as all of its horses but three were disabled. The battery was subsequently recovered by Brown's Brigade of Stewart's Division. The left of the Brigade was protected in retiring by Clayton's Brigade of Stewart's Division advancing into the Brock field from the south. The Brigade then withdrew about a quarter of a mile and was not further

engaged during the day.
