Great Mills
A textile factory was built originally on this site in an attempt to develop cotton as an alternative crop to tobacco, still a major crop in this area. One of the county's leading manufacturing industries in the early 1800's, in time the cotton crop declined because of poor land conditions and overgrazing by sheep. The textile machinery was moved to Savage, Maryland and operations in the factory continued with the saw and grist mills.HM Number | HM2KC0 |
