At the end of two hours' engagement. First with troops of General Palmer's Division, and subsequently with those of VanCleve's Division, and King's Brigade of Reynold's Division. Wright's Birgade was forced to the rear and Clayton's Brigade of Stewart's
Division advanced to its relief. Carnes' battery, which had been captured, owing to the loss of nearly all its horses, by S. Beatty's Brigade of VanCleve's Division, was subsequently recaptured by Brown's Brigade of Stewart's Division. Upon the advance of
Clayton, Wright withdrew to this line, and was not further engaged during the day, though ordered into position at 5:00 P.M. to support the night attack of General Cleburne's Division and a portion of General Cheatham's.
