Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne, Pioneer Missionary of the Society of the Sacred Heart, came to St. Charles from France and founded the first free school west of the Mississippi on this site in 1818.

(right plaque:)
Mother Duchesne established other schools in Missouri and Louisiana. She died here in 1852 and was canonized in 1988. This state was commissioned by the City of St. Charles and created by sculptor Harry Weber in 2007.
