Canal buoy boats were originally constructed in
the 1920s and 1930s to service buoys on the Barge
Canal. Since the Barge Canal followed natural rivers
and lakes for much of its length, as opposed to the
mule-drawn dug canal, navigation buoys were needed
to mark the channel and help mariners avoid shoals
and other obstructions. These buoys had lamps which
were fueled by kerosene, and canal employees had to
regularly refill the kerosene and check the condition
and position of these buoys. Originally built for this
purpose, several of these vessels remain in active
service today and other projects along the 524-mile
New York State Canal System.
