Brockville Historic Area: The Brock Trail

The Brockville Farmers' Market was first established here in 1833
The Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada, by an Act passed on December 18, 1832, authorized the establishment of a market in Brockville. The Act was signed into law on February 13, 1833. On October 18th of the same year, the new village government, the Brockville Board of Police, accepted a piece of land here on the shoreline from the Hon. Charles Jones, the major landowner in the east end of the town. The property extended 400 feet south of the King's Highway (now King Street) and was 240 feet wide. A small stone indoor butchers' market building was opened in January 1836. It was located in the centre of the market area and contained stalls for six butchers.
The outdoor space of the Market Square has been reserved for market gardeners, who have been coming on market days to sell their produce since the early 1830s.
This photo shows typical market business on a Saturday morning. You can see the wagons lined up on both sides of West Market Street.
In the background on the left is the large stone REVERE HOTEL, which overlooked the market from 1849

to 1974.
