Camp Melton Historic Preserve

Two Catalpas, gnarled with age, stand on the lawn of the imposing brick mansion called Chatham that served as the Union headquarters during the bloody battle at Fredericksburg, Virginia, in December 1862. Union General Ambrose Burnside camped his 13,000-man Army of the Potomac near Chatham on Stafford Heights, a bluff above the Rappahannock River. This tree grew from a seed picked from the Chatham House Catalpa.
