La Société Saint-Pierre / Église Saint-Pierre

1790-1990On September 27, 1790, His Excellency William MacCormick, Governor of the Province of Cape Breton, graciously and generously granted
7 000 acres of land at Chéticamp to our «Quatorze Vieux». By this
historical act, our ancestors, after long years of exile and suffering, became
full proprietors in their own right. In the year of Our Lord 1990,
with gratitude toward our benevolent Governor MacCormick, the people
of Chéticamp devotedly dedicate this plaque in memory of our courageous ancestors. In response to the menace of assimilation, La Société Saint-Pierre was founded under the motto "Dieu, Langue, Patrie," to promote the education of young Acadians in their mother tongue. Since the 70's, our Society has broadened its horizons to deal with all that concerns the status of the Acadians of Inverness County. On this 50th anniversary of our Society, we, the present membership, wish to honour our courageous founders as well as those responsible for its revival.
Saint Peter's Church is an achievement of Reverend Pierre Fiset who was Pastor of Chéticamp

from 1875 to 1909. A daring character, ever undaunted, his penetrating foresight wisely sensed where lay the future of Chéticamp. The people of Chéticamp, motivated by their alert staunch faith, unhesitatingly seconded his courageous zeal. In this year of grace 1993, the centenary of their church, gratefully the parishioners dedicate this Plaque to him in loving remembrance.
