Geata na marbh

— [The Gate of the Dead] —

Through this gate from 1841 onwards passed the
bodies of deceased inmates of the Celbridge Union
Workhouse on their way to burial in these
grounds. The Workhouse System conducted its
burials in a characteristically efficient manner
and this gateway facilitated the transfer of the
dead from the workhouse to the adjacent burial
ground. The manner of their burial mirrored
their lives. They were buried with little ceremony,
causing the minimum of disruption in death to a
society that largely ignored them in life.
