After graduating from the University of South Carolina, C. Spencer Guerry began his law enforcement career on March 1, 1979, by joining the Georgetown Police Department. He rose through various positions of increasing responsibility until attaining the rank of Major (Deputy Chief of Police). In February of 1990, Major Guerry gave his life in service to the citizens of Georgetown when, on March 7, 1994, while investigating a suspicious vehicle, he was shot and subsequently died from wounds that he sustained. Because of Major Guerry's reputation for integrity and professionalism, it is not the manner of his death which makes him a hero, but the manner in which he lived.
