Fork Union Baptist Church was constituted in1798. Presbyterian, Episcopal, Methodist,and Baptist congregations shared as a placeof worship the current church, built in 1824and first known as the Brick Meetinghouse.Gen. John Hartwell Cocke, a local plantationowner who assisted Thomas Jefferson inestablishing the University of Virginia, wasits architect. It is the oldest Church buildingin Fluvanna County in continuous use forthat purpose. In 1898, ten of its membersbecame the original guarantors of ForkUnion Military Academy. The churchsanctuary was the site of the first andsubsequent academy graduations until 1937.
