This Monument was erected bythe women of South Carolina in 1896 to John Caldwell Calhounin commemoration of his eminentStatesmanship during the manyyears of his public life - it replaces one formerly on the same spot which proved unsatisfactory.The funds for its constructionwere raised soon after his deathin 1850 by the Ladies CalhounMonument Association. Itstreasurer Mrs. M. A. Snowden having charge of all its assets securedthem about her person and thussaved them during the memorablenight of the destruction on the17th February 1865
