The Governor of the Commonwealth ofMassachusetts Michael S. Dukakis, anddescendant's of the African-American CivilWar Volunteers of the 54th and 55th InfantryRegiments and the 5th Cavalry Regiment ofMassachusetts, accompanied by distinguishedcitizens of the Commonwealth, came on this dayto Beaufort National Veterans Cemetery tohonor the members of the Black 55th MassachusettsRegiment of Volunteer Infantry, whose remains were found on Folly Island, South Carolina in 1987, and reinterred this day with full militaryhonors befitting American soldiers.

These hallowed grounds hold theremains of at least nineteen BlackUnion soldiers, 55th MassachusettsInfantry Regiment, who lost theirlives on Folly Island in the siege of Charleston, during the winterencampment of Nov 1863 - Feb 1864,Civil War.

Their earthly remains lay longforgotten until rediscovered in May 1987. They were reburied atthis site by the Community of Beaufort, May 29, 1989.
