This site marks the colonial meeting place of the region's earliest Christian congregation, dating to the 1730s. Under Pastor Frederick Augustus Conrad Muhlenberg, the congregation joined the Lutheran Synod in 1771. As an army hospital during the Revolutionary War, this edifice was badly damaged. Following the restoration, the congregation applied to the Federal Government for restitution. Later Pastor Muhlenberg served as the first and fourth Speaker of the House of Representatives under President George Washington.
