On October 22, 1857, land at this location wasconveyed to members of the Methodist ProtestantChurch. Construction of a house of worship wascompleted soon thereafter. The congregationconsisted largely of persons who were employedin the community's booming maritime and commercial economy. An expansion and rebuildingproject was completed in 1906, with improvementsincluding the addition of the present stained glasswindows. The name "Grace Methodist Church" wasadopted in 1940 following the merger of theMethodist Episcopal and Methodist Protestantdenominations. Services here were discontinued in 1962. The property was sold to the MiltonHistorical Society in 1971, and the building wasformally named the Lydia Black Cannon Museumto honor the person who had facilitated its purchase. In 2004, the rapid deteriorating condition of thishistoric structure resulted in an urgent campaign toraise funds for its preservation. The hard work ofconcerned citizens and outpouring of support for the effort led to the renovation of the old sanctuary and construction of much-needed newspace. The Milton Museum was reopened in 2006.
