Cobb's Artillery Battalion

— Breckinridge's Division - Breckinridge's Corps —

Fifth Company Battalion Washington Artillery
Four 12-PDR. Napoleons, Two James Rifles
Capt. Robert Cobb's Artillery Battalion.
Breckinridge's (Bate's) Div. Breckinridge's Corps.
Capt. C.H. Slocomb, Commanding,
1st Lieut. W.C.D. Vaught, 2d Lieut. A.J. Leverich.
1st Lieut. J.A. Chalaron, 2d Lieut. C.G. Johnsen.

Nov. 25th, 1863, 4 P.M.
This battery moved from the valley at 3:30 A.M., via. Rossville: Three guns under Lieut. Chalaron took position on this ground; three under Lieut. Vaught on the next projection to the left, no infantry support intervening.
A rapid fire was opened on the advancing enemy, which caused him to seek shelter behind the inequalities of the ground. This projection, and the steepness of the ridge enabled the troops of Hazen and Willich to gain the crest 200 yards to the right. Chalaron's guns opened on this force, when two of his limber chests were blown up killing many horses. The enemy also crowned the ridge on the left. Being nearly surrounded four of the guns and caissons, to escape capture plunged down the ridge to the rear, were mired and abandoned.
The Captain, Lieuts. Vaught and Chalaron, with some of the cannoneers, joined the troops where the first stand was made, manned and fought pieces of other batteries until the close of the action.
Casualties: 7 men wounded, 3 missing: Saved: 4 Limbers, 60 horses.
