Created to reclaim this historic riverfront for the citizens of Leavenworth and to recall its prominent role in the development of the American West.
————————
When Leavenworth was established in 1854 it was already an important hub on the Santa Fe, Military, and Oregon Trails. Used as a base for military operations, Fort Leavenworth, founded in 1827, gave the City of Leavenworth the advantage of an established landing for steamboats on the Missouri River, and a reputation as a transporation and trade center in Kansas Territory. Thus, from its inception, Leavenworth was a bustling town, outfitting traders for the trip to Santa Fe or helping along immigrants to a better life in the West.
In 1866 the first railroad entered the city and since that time Leavenworth has been served by The Missouri Pacific, The Kansas Central, The Kansas City, Wyandotte and Northwestern, The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, The Chicago Rock Island and Pacific, and The Union Pacific. Serving as an industrial center Leavenworth continuously grew.
As the First City of Kansas, Leavenworth was at the heart of the transportation revolution. From Boat to Wagon to Railroad, Leavenworth led the way in opening the vast resources of the West.
