August 30, 1862
Ordered to raid Federal supply lines in West Tennessee, Confederate General Frank C. Armstrong rode north from Holly Springs, Mississippi in August 1862, with a large force of cavalry. Near this spot on August 30, Armstrong engaged a Union brigade commanded by Col. Mortimer Leggett, sent to destroy him. After a fierce day-long battle, allowing the Confederate to continue their raid north of the Hatchie River.HM Number | HMYWV |
