Baxter National Bank
The Illinois Cash Store, a grocery and dry goods store, was constructed on this site in 1868 by John M. Cooper who came to Baxter Springs from Illinois. In 1886, he constructed a new brick building one block south and moved the business. in 1900, Cooper constructed the present brick building to house the Baxter Bank. The upstairs was used as the Masonic Lodge Hall. In 1905, this building was acquired by the Baxter National Bank. Baxter National had been established in 1885 by A.R. Kane, J.J. Fribley, A.L. Harvey, and L.D. Brewster. Baxter National operated here until 1952 when it merged with the American Bank to form the American National Bank. In 1914, the Baxter National Bank was robbed by Henry Starr.| HM Number | HMZ4V |
