Inscription
Site of first settlement on the Holland Purchase in 1798. Originally known as Transit. The name was changed to Stafford in 1841 following settlement by a colony of Devonshire English people. The buildings of historic and architectural interest are the Town Hall, C. 1850; I.O.O.F. Hall and store, 1890; Episcopal Church 1842 and Parish House 1848; and two residences located on the S.W. Corner 1809 and the S.E. Corner C.1932 of the first Transit Road.

The Memorial Park is the site of an early stage coach tavern, 1804. National Register of Historic Places-1976.
