In Glencoe as in other Alamance County villages, the Holts built many substantial, 2-story houses for the workers. They resembled farmhouses in the area. In most of the 2-story houses, carpenters used hand-sawn timbers put together with pegs. Some have brick nogging between the timbers for insulation.

These houses contain four to six rooms, for sometimes as many as ten or more family members. There were two rooms per floor, with a central hallway on the first floor. Originally, detached kitchens stood in the back yards - a typical Southern way to separate cooking heat and threat of fire. In the 20th century some kitchens were built as rear ells. There were privies in the back yards.
