On the 6th day of April, 1862, this division was being organized from new troops as they arrived upon the field. Seven regiments of infantry, two batteries of artillery and two battalions of cavalry had reported, been assigned to brigades, and were encamped across the Eastern Corinth Road. The 15th and 16th Iowa and 23d Missouri regiments, under orders to report to this division, were on boats just arrived at the Landing.
The 15th and 16th Iowa were sent to reenforce Gen. McClernand and did not join this division until after the battle. The 23d Missouri reported to Gen. Prentiss at his third position.
A reconnoitering party sent out from this division engaged of Hardee's pickets at 4.55 a.m. April 6, 1862 and opened the battle of Shiloh.
The division engaged the enemy in front of its camp early in the morning. It fell back to its camp and continued the engagement until 9 a.m., when it retired to its third position, between the 2d and 4th Divisions, northwest of the Peach Orchard. At 5.30 p.m. it was surrounded and its commander and 1008 men captured.
The division had present for duty, including the 15th and 16th Iowa and the 23d Missouri, officers and men, of all arms, 7545.
Its loss was 236 killed; 928 wounded; 1008 missing; Total, 2,172.
