"The house stands right on the top of the hill, separated by fields and belts of woodland from all other houses, and looks out over the bay and the Sound. We see the sun go down beyond long reaches of land and water . . . We love all the seasons; the snows and bare woods of winter; the rush of growing things and the blossom-spray of spring; the yellow grain, the ripening fruits and tasseled corn, and the deep, leafy shades that are heralded by ?the green dance of summer; and the sharp fall winds that tear the brilliant banners with which the trees greet the dying year."
Theodore Roosevelt

When Theodore Roosevelt was a teenager, his father established a summer home in Oyster Bay. Theodore spent many vacations exploring the surrounding fields, woodlands, and bay.

In 1885, Theodore built a home on the nearby Cove Neck peninsula he enjoyed as a youth.

Roosevelt chose to name his estate Sagamore Hill, after the Sagamore Mohannis, chief of the Matinecock tribe who had occupied the area some 350 years prior.

The Roosevelts raised six active children at their beloved "Sagamore." Frequently Theodore and his children could be seen playing games in the fields or venturing out for a swim, hike, or horseback ride.

Except for the many absences imposed by his rich public career, Theodore and his wife Edith spent all their married life here. Sagamore Hill remained a home, haven, and gateway to the outdoors Theodore loved. Today, Sagamore Hill is furnished as it was during Theodore Roosevelt's busy lifetime.
