Historical Plaza Walking Tour Stop 8

The Seitz Drug Store, founded across the street in 1868 on the corner of North Main and Douglas Avenue, was advertised as the oldest established drugstore in western Kansas. The claim still holds true as it is still in existence one block north on Douglas Avenue. The U.S. House operated by Rowdy Joe Lowe was east of Seitz. He and his wife, Rowdy Kate, kept the pot boiling in Ellsworth. They later operated saloons in the "Red Light" districts of Newton and Wichita.

Also along the block were Bill Nagle's Livery Stable and J.C. Veache's Hotel and Restaurant which sported a sign, "Welcome Texas" near the center of the block. On this street, Ira E. Lloyd maintained his law office in an upstairs room with a commanding view of the busy cattle town. Sheriff Whitney and Deputy John Delong walked from Veache's restaurant to the Depots (14) to intervene in a fight between Texans and locals which ended in Whitney's death in front of Brennan's Saloon (12). Arthur Larkin, the owner of the Grand Central Hotel (9) also was a partner with Z. Jackson in Jackson & Larkin's Dry Goods and Clothing Store at the east end of this block.
