Sanford sits on the southern shore of Lake Monroe in the middle basin of the St. Johns River. The river rises in the marshes of Indian River County and flows slowly north 310 miles to Jacksonville and the Atlantic Ocean. The river spreads out in a chain of lakes including the five mile wide Lake Monroe, named for U.S. President James Monroe. In the 1800s, riverboats opened south Florida to tourists and settlers. Lake Monroe, the head of navigation on the river, was chosen as the location for the port city of Sanford in 1870.
