An ornamental eagle perched high in front ofthe Eagle Hotel one block south. Irishimmigrant James Patton opened the hostelry in1814. Almost opposite the Eagle, theSwannanoa Hotel began operation in 1878,making South Main Street - now BiltmoreAvenue - a nineteenth-century social center.
