May 8, 1864. While Geary's Div. (20th A.C. [US]) stormed Rocky Face Ridge at Dug Gap, 5 mi N.E., McPherson's Army of the Tenn. (15th & 16th A.C. [US]), gained a lodgment in Snake Cr. & held it while the 14th, 20th & 23d Corps [US] left the Dalton front & marched through the gap.

Outflanked in his position at Dalton, Johnston [CS] evacuated it, May 12, & withdrew to Resaca, which he defended against Sherman's forces in two days of battle, May 14th & 15th.
