This stone was part of the piers supportingthe historic Ludendorff Bridge whichonce spanned the Rhine River atRemagen, Germany. A forward patrol ofthe US 9th Armored Division capturedthe bridge in a surprise attack onMarch 7, 1945, thereby aiding the Allieswith a foothold in Germany. The bridgeat Remagen played a key role in thefinal chapter of World War II.
