Van Derver's Brigade

— Brannan's Division —

Battery I, 4th U.S. Artillery.
4 Light 12 Pdrs.
Van Derver's Brigade, Brannan's Division, Thomas' Corps.
Sept. 20, 1863. noon
1st Lieut. Frank G. Smith, Commanding.
1st Lieut. George B. Rodney.
2nd Lieut. John M. Stephenson.

Soon after the Union line was pierced near Brotherton's southeast of this position, about 11:15 A.M., and the enemy advanced in heavy columns through the gap, and changed direction to assault this ridge, this section in charge of Lieut. Rodney, which had been engaged with the battery near the Snodgrass house, came to this position under orders of Gen. Brannan, who was actively engaged in rallying the flying infantry and forming line on this hill. The section performed efficient service in establishing this line, and after about an hour rejoined its battery near the Snodgrass house, participating with it in all subsequent engagements there until the close of the battle.
