Near this place, on land occupied since the1780s by the Early family, Confederate GeneralJubal Early was born in 1816, The Generalpracticed law in Franklin County and served inthe Mexican War before the Civil War. Earlyfought in more battles than any other Confederate general and came closest to capturingWashington. Because of his undying devotionto the southern cause, he became known as"The Unreconstructed Rebel."
