Class of 1873. While Instructor at the Naval Academy in 11879 made first accurate measurement of speed of light. Invented interferometer. First American scientist to receive Nobel Prize, for physics in 1907. Performed with Morley ether drift experiment basic to Einstein's theory of relativity. His Distinguished career is a continuing inspiration to midshipmen.
