The open door symbolizes the heritage of religious freedom granted to the colonial citizens of Maryland by Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore in 1657. His belief is such freedom inspired Maryland to become the first colony to create a separation of church and state, greatly influencing the U.S. Constitution and attracting many residents seeking a safe environment in which to practice their faith.
